2021 Portfolio Competition

Club members may recall that we had an excellent ZOOM presentation from Craig Parker earlier in the year on his entry of a Photographic Portfolio to The Photographic Society of America (PSA).

Craig has agreed to judge a club Portfolio Competition later this year. The competition would be open to all club members and would involve uploading to the club website six individual images, a composite of those images and a Statement of Intent. Craig would then judge each members portfolio and provide comments and a grading similar to the club’s digital competition. This competition will standalone from the club’s  normal annual print, digital and Image of the Year competitions and will not contribute to the point scores for these competitions.

At this stage it is envisaged that the Portfolio Competition would be run in parallel with our September competitions.

This is a great opportunity for members to develop their photographic skills and pursue a theme or project they have an interest in or passion for. The purpose of this Post is to inform you of this opportunity. More information around the rules for the competition will be provided shortly.

Print Competition Night – Wednesday 16th June

Our next Print Competition Night will be held at Belmont 16s Sailing Club on Wednesday 16th June. Our judges for the night will be Bev Woodman and Di Schofield. The night will be chaired by Greg Carruthers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the number of entries we received in May was lower that what we normally saw pre-pandemic. That said, our judges have been instructed to judge the prints entered on their merits and will give awards accordingly. I therefore encourage members who wish to participate in print competitions to get their entries in. The club website is ready to upload your entries.

Depending on the number of entries we will endeavour to provide time for discussion on some of the prints  as feedback from our May meeting indicated members valued the opportunity to discuss some of the entries and learn how they may be improved.

As we did at our last meeting I would remind everyone of our Covid 19 Management Plan:

  • Don’t come to the meeting if you are feeling unwell or off -colour
  • Check-in on entry to the club
  • Use the hand sanitiser stations located around the club
  • Practice social distancing. Chairs will be arranged with a 1.5 m separation. When viewing prints please move in single files from right to left when facing the front of the room.
  • If you are assisting in putting up or taking down stands then please keep your distance from each other.

Zoom presentation THURSDAY night

YES! Please note new date for zoom workshop this week will be on Thursday June 10th 7pm rather than the usual Wednesday night due to clash with State of Origin.

Presenter this week will be Jen Fawkes – Jen will be presenting “Image Evaluation” – powerful images are created with an understanding of the key elements of making a great image. When you look at your own work do you ever ask the question ” Is this a winning image?”

Jen’s workshop is a great opportunity to have a better understanding of these key elements. You will find documents to download under educational resources to help with her workshop ( available by mid week)

It is very easy to join a Zoom workshop. If you have not joined before and would like to, please contact me.
