Proposal to change Club Grades and Print Competition Entries

The club offers a range of competitions to members as a means for members to improve their photographic skills. It has been apparent for some time that we are getting insufficient print entries in B Grade  to have a viable competition. As a result your committee is intending to make some changes next year by changing the club competition grades and the number of print competitions members can enter.

Rather than the current three grades – B, A and Advanced, we intend to only have an Open and Advanced Grade in 2025.

 What does this mean:

  • Those members who are in A and B grade will be in Open Grade in 2025 for print and digital competitions.
  • Advanced Grade members who would like to move to Open Grade can request a regrading to Open Grade by contacting Roy Killen or Bill Chambers.
  • A Grade members who have done well in 2024 competitions will be approached to step up to Advanced Grade.

This process will take place once the October competition results are finalised.

In the same vein of streamlining club activities and having more viable competitions we are proposing to no longer offer  Small Print competitions next year.

If you have any concerns or comments about these changes please speak to one of your committee members by the end of September so feedback can be considered at the October committee meeting.

Reminder and Final Information for Street Photography Group Outing – Sunday 25th August.

For those who want to have a bite to eat beforehand we will be meeting at 12 noon at Ground Up Espresso, 120 Young Street, Carrington (almost opposite the Post Office). There should be plenty of street parking.

This cafe closes at 12.30pm on Sunday and takes last orders at 12 noon but there is another cafe a short walk away called, the Fairmont Diner (corner of Cowper Street South and Young Street) that is open till 2.00pm. There are also a couple of pubs nearby.

We will aim to start our photo walk at 1.00pm. I will give a brief talk on potential risks before we set off in small groups. We will be starting at the intersection of  Cowper and Young Street.

In Lott Street you will find the quietest and noisiest street in Newcastle (so described by a local today). Nearby in Bourke Street there is the historical Pump House. The streets surrounding the main shopping street are full of character and will allow you to wander and soak up the atmosphere.

Another interesting feature is a long footbridge accessible to the public that runs across the rail marshalling yards for the Port of Newcastle. From this vantage point you get a good feel of some of the port infrastructure. To access this I suggest hopping in your car and driving to the northern end of Elizabeth Street as it is a bit of a walk from where we are starting. We could target to look at this towards the end of the activity.

My mobile number is 0438 403 933. For those coming, see you Sunday.
