Newcastle Show March 1st to 3rd

Our club will be helping to organise an exhibition of images at the upcoming Newcastle Show on March 1st to 3rd.

Katherine JAMES is the driving force behind our involvement. For those who would like to contribute we need 6 to 8 prints you may have entered in any print competition.

They must be on a mat board 50cm X 40cm (just as you would have entered them with name and title etc)

The Show Committee have requested the images are NOT of portraits of people, anything else is fine!

Interested in being involved and having your images on display? Then bring them along on Jan or Feb print nights at VBC and Katherine will collect them.

If this doesn’t suit please drop them off to Katherine at her house. Any questions please contact Katherine.

Thanks GregC

Wangi Camera Club – Presentation by Ian English on Self Portraits

I know the timing is a bit off given our January Set Subject competition on Self Portraits closes tonight, but I received the invitation this morning to a presentation on Self Portrait Photography by Ian English which will be held on Monday 22nd January at the Wangi Workers Club commencing at 7.00pm.

There will also be two workshops following Ian’s presentation at the Martinsville Studio. The first is a practical workshop on Self Portraiture, the second on Photographing Models. To attend these workshops participants must first have intended Ian’s presentation on Monday 22nd January. Further information can be found at the following link –  Wangi Workshops_Self Portraits

2024 – Here we Come

On behalf of your committee I wish everyone  the very best for 2024. I trust that everyone had an enjoyable festive season with family and friends.

The new year is approaching rapidly and club activities will commence in January. Our website is ready to accept your entries for the January competitions which are due by 11.00pm on Sunday 7th January, with our first club night the following Wednesday, 10th January, 7.00pm at the Valentine Bowling Club.

As many of you may be aware I travelled overseas in November and December and whilst away was fortunate to see a number of photographic exhibitions in Turin and Bologna. This was complete chance but provided a great opportunity to gain inspiration and ideas for my own photography. Amongst our set subject topics for next year we have self portraits, reproduce an iconic photo, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). All of these topics were covered in the exhibitions I saw. In Turin there was a retrospective of the Hungarian photographer, André Kertész who is renowned for his contributions photographic composition and the photo essay. The following image from the exibition  the power of composition in picture making –

Bologna was holding a number of exhibitions acrosss the city including a retrospective on the American photographer Vivian Maier, 1/2/1926 – 21/4/2009. Vivian was an amazing street photographer ” whose work was only discovered and recognised after her death. She took 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York city and Los Angeles” – Wikipedia. I took the following image at the exhibition in Bologna.

I would like to invite you to think about what you would like to achieve with your photography in 2024 and to let the committee know how the club may be able to help you. What challenges will you set for yourself in 2024? It could be as simple as taking at least one image every day. That’s how André Kertész started by photographing everything he saw around himself.

See you at Valentine Bowling Club on Wednesday 10th January at 7.00pm.
