2024 – Here we Come
On behalf of your committee I wish everyone the very best for 2024. I trust that everyone had an enjoyable festive season with family and friends.
The new year is approaching rapidly and club activities will commence in January. Our website is ready to accept your entries for the January competitions which are due by 11.00pm on Sunday 7th January, with our first club night the following Wednesday, 10th January, 7.00pm at the Valentine Bowling Club.
As many of you may be aware I travelled overseas in November and December and whilst away was fortunate to see a number of photographic exhibitions in Turin and Bologna. This was complete chance but provided a great opportunity to gain inspiration and ideas for my own photography. Amongst our set subject topics for next year we have self portraits, reproduce an iconic photo, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). All of these topics were covered in the exhibitions I saw. In Turin there was a retrospective of the Hungarian photographer, André Kertész who is renowned for his contributions photographic composition and the photo essay. The following image from the exibition the power of composition in picture making –
Bologna was holding a number of exhibitions acrosss the city including a retrospective on the American photographer Vivian Maier, 1/2/1926 – 21/4/2009. Vivian was an amazing street photographer ” whose work was only discovered and recognised after her death. She took 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York city and Los Angeles” – Wikipedia. I took the following image at the exhibition in Bologna.
I would like to invite you to think about what you would like to achieve with your photography in 2024 and to let the committee know how the club may be able to help you. What challenges will you set for yourself in 2024? It could be as simple as taking at least one image every day. That’s how André Kertész started by photographing everything he saw around himself.
See you at Valentine Bowling Club on Wednesday 10th January at 7.00pm.
