Street Photography Interest Group – October Outing

The next outing of the Street Photography Interest Group will be on Sunday 13th October starting at 9.00am. Feel free to come along even if you have not joined this Interest Group. We will meet in the open space opposite The Happy Wombat Café which is located at 605 Hunter Street, beside the NSW TAFE Building. The Happy Wombat is open from 8.00am so it’s a good spot if you want to have some breakfast or a coffee before we start our photoshoot. At this time of the day there should be plenty of unrestricted street parking. You can also park free for 3 hours in the Coles carpark at Market Town which is nearby.

Depending on numbers we will break into two groups. We will head over to the tram stop which is a short distance from our meeting place. One group will catch a tram up to the interchange. The other group will head to the beach end. Each group will work their way back to our starting point either by wandering or jumping off and on the tram. I would like you to confine yourselves to the tram corridor, a “block either side”. Your aim will be to capture images of Objects you find on the street.

The Challenge:

Objects surround you wherever you are on the street. Signs, graffiti, street furniture, dogs, prams, you name it. Whether they are things that move or are inanimate they are valid subjects for street photographers. Try to focus your attention on particular types of objects, whether they be signs, litter, street furniture, doorways. Try and come up with a theme that ties your collection of images together. No people! Some of the techniques you will be developing and using are your observational skills. Your composition skills will be important to isolate the object you have chosen from the background.

I would like you to submit four images again and few words as to why you selected these objects to photograph and share. Your images can be in colour or monochrome. The deadline for sending me your images is 31st October.

Whilst this is the focus of this photoshoot keep your eyes open to other opportunities. It is fairly early in the day so depending on the weather there should be opportunities for high contrast shots as morning light penetrates the built environment. There will be a street topic in the club’s 2025 Set Subjects so this is a good opportunity to capture more general street images.

Any questions please ask and if you intend to come along please let me know so I get an idea of numbers.
